Marie McElroy, Medical Secretary

"It’s not like being a secretary in an office. Yes we answer phones and use computers, but we are so much more involved with people. Often we are the first port of call for parents and develop relationships with them which last for years.

"My medical knowledge has certainly improved. Eyes, hormones, metabolic conditions, brittle bones, diabetes – I have been involved with them all, and one of the most enjoyable parts of my job is working at the diabetes clinic – you get the chance to put faces to names!

"One of the consultants I work with calls me ‘his brain’, and I take that as a real compliment. We are part of the team that makes a difference to children and young peoples’ lives, and I am very proud of that."
