Volunteer role - ArtCart Volunteer

Department: Main Outpatients and Wards
Key contact: Volunteer Lead
Purpose: To offer patients and families the opportunity to take part in fun and creative activities while they are waiting in the Main Outpatients waiting area
Time commitment: Minimum of one two-hour session per week for six months. Hours are Monday to Friday, 10am-4pm

Key tasks

  • Offer a range of creative activities which allow children and young people to express their individuality
  • Introduce activities to patients and families waiting and encourage them to participate
  • Provide normalising experiences and conversation for families in the department
  • Develop, research and plan creative activities and worksheets which are inclusive and appropriate to the needs of patients and siblings
  • To supervise, instruct, encourage and interact with patients/siblings as they participate in creative activities
  • Announce your arrival when visiting the department
  • Collect appropriate equipment for your activities from the ArtCart cupboard in Main Outpatients
  • Help maintain a clean and safe environment in which children can play
  • Tidy materials away after each session and return items to the ArtCart cupboard
  • Ensure the ArtCart cupboard is clean, tidy and stocked with appropriate materials
  • Alert supervisory staff to areas of concern
  • Keep all information given or discussed within the hospital confidential
  • Attend relevant training sessions as provided by the Trust
  • Demonstrate the BCH values in actions and behaviours

Desired skills and experience

  • Appreciation of the importance of normalising creative activities within a hospital environment to children and families
  • Experience of, or the ability to communicate with children, young people and families, often in a busy environment
  • Able to develop positive relationships with BCH staff including receptionists and nursing staff
  • Ability to think creatively and design different activities
  • A fun and positive outlook towards arts and education
