Volunteer role - Meet and Greet

Department: Corporate Nursing
Key contact: Hospitality Manager and Volunteer Lead
Purpose: To provide a friendly and helpful welcome to patients, families and visitors to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and to provide a general way finding service.
Time commitment: Minimum of one two hour session per week for six months. Hours will be between Monday to Friday, 9am – 6pm.

Key tasks

  • Meet and greet patients, relatives and visitors at the hospital main entrance and other public areas, providing a friendly and polite welcome to the hospital
  • Direct or accompany patients, families and visitors to their appropriate destination
  • Provide information on local amenities such as public transport, post boxes, shops
  • Answer general queries about the hospital and its services
  • Refer enquirers to appropriate members of staff if they need further help
  • Actively look for anyone who may be lost or may need help
  • Use your initiative and patrol the busiest areas of the hospital
  • Report any untoward incidents to the Main Reception desk
  • Keep all information given or discussed within the hospital confidential
  • Attend relevant training sessions provided by your department
  • Demonstrate the BCH values in your actions and behaviours

  • Induction into the hospital and your ward/department
  • Ongoing support from a named member of staff
  • Additional training as required for your role
  • Reimbursement of your travel expenses (on production of receipts)
  • Reimbursement of a meal and drink if you complete more than 4½ hours
  • A written reference upon the completion of 50 hours of volunteering
