Volunteer role - Ward Host

Department: various
Key contact: Ward Manager/Nurse in Charge
Purpose: to provide a friendly welcome to wards and departments and assist in providing practical support to BCH staff and families
Time commitment: minimum of one two hour session per week for six months. Hours between Monday to Sunday 10am-5pm, although these may vary depending on the department.

Key tasks

  • Meet and greet patients, relatives and visitors, providing a friendly welcome
  • Answer the phone and take accurate messages
  • Answer the door video camera and check identification
  • Escort parents/carers and siblings to various locations in the hospital (e.g. chapel, washing facilities, Parent Accommodation, restaurant/café)
  • Chat to patients and families, and help them feel at ease
  • Run general errands for families e.g. fetch newspapers
  • Keep waiting areas and family rooms tidy
  • Keep notice boards updated
  • Maintain stocks of leaflets and patient information and distribute as necessary
  • Deliver/collect clinical notes where necessary
  • Filing, photocopying and basic administration, where necessary
  • Keep all information given or discussed within the hospital confidential
  • Attend relevant training sessions provided by your department
  • Demonstrate the BCH values in your actions and behaviours

  • Experience of working or volunteering with children, young people and families
  • Ability to approach patients, parents and families in a confident and caring manner
  • Friendly telephone manner
  • Understanding of loss and bereavement issues
  • Listening skills

  • Understanding of, or ability to learn, personal and professional boundaries
